Two major taekwondo events are happening back to back on the Gold Coast, and they're basically the same thing twice but with slightly different levels of seriousness. The World Taekwondo President's Cup (a G3 event, so more world ranking points for those who care about that sort of thing) and the Australian Open (a G2 event, still respectable but let's be honest, the numbers are lower) will both be at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre. That's the fancy place with the big roof, not your local dojo. They're inviting elite black belt athletes from everywhere, which means if you show up you'll either be very impressed or very intimidated.
Both competitions cover Kyorugi (sparring, aka kicking each other in a controlled way), Para-Kyorugi, Poomsae (patterns, like a dance but with violence), and Para-Poomsae. So there's something for everyone, including people who don't use their legs. The President's Cup runs from 18 to 19 June, and the Australian Open takes over from 20 to 21 June. If you're planning to drive, be warned: parking might be as scarce as a polite taekwondo match. Use the EasyPark app to pay for metered spots, or take public transport and avoid the whole faff. For more parking info, check the City of Gold Coast's website, but maybe not right before the event because you'll be stuck in a queue.
