Let's face it. Money for many families is tight these school holidays. And when multiple children make up your family, finding great ways to thrill all your kids, without damaging the budget, is essential. Most people on the Gold Coast have heard of the iconic Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. At 28 Tomewin Street, Currumbin, QLD, it is a place you have to spend a full day at to really appreciate. However, if you don't have a day, and you are looking for low cost options these school holidays, consider a trip to the Sanctuary for the Rainbow Lorikeet Feedings at 8am or 4pm daily. **Closed April 25 and December 25.

Food (or lorikeet milk to be precise) is provided in exchange for a donation to their wildlife fund. Therefore, it's a win /win for everyone. You get a cheap and fabulous adventure for the kids, connecting them to nature and away from screens at home, and the Sanctuary gets an injection into their wonderful wildlife work. The lorikeet milk is provided on lipped trays and your kids can then marvel at these brilliantly beautiful birds while they sit on your head, the kids' head, your arms, the people next to you, fighting for the last drop of what is on your trays. If you are lucky like we were, you can also snap a photo of the kids with a snake or an owl (or another wild feathered creature) in the undercover area next to the lorikeet feeding ring. This is not guaranteed, however, and occurs on a casual basis. A professional photographer from the sanctuary will also photograph the event, and these photos will be available approximately 30 minutes later at a cost of three images for $20.

The feedings do draw a crowd, so aim to arrive ten minutes before the session starts. The wildlife handlers will deliver an informative introduction to the feeding and are generous with the amount of food you are given for the birds. You will find the kids will lose interest before your food supply runs out and then you can grab a bite to eat in the cafe adjacent (subject to opening hours). You can also add to your low cost adventure by crossing the road to Honeyworld directly opposite the sanctuary, which is also free to enter. Here you can teach the kids all about the life cycle and environmental significance of bees. There is ample parking in the area, and its a close stroll to the beach front and local parklands.

Pop some rainbow lorikeet feeding on your 'low-cost' social calendar these school holidays and head on down to Currumbin. Ensure you have your camera handy and be prepared for the unexpected. The noise is something else, and you WILL end up with a bird or two on your head. Just be warned that is not unheard of to come away wearing a deposit or two from these entertaining birds. It is also common to experience some slight markings on a child's arm from where the birds grip while eating. Some children might find it too loud and too interactive.
