is back, rolling into the historic village of Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast for another year of paint, pastels, and polite competition. It is an annual not-for-profit affair, which basically means the organisers are in it for the love of art rather than the profit margins, and they have managed to scrape together a prize pool of 33,000 dollars. The top prize alone is 20,000 dollars, which is enough to make even the most stoic landscape painter crack a smile. The award focuses on representational art – so if you are into pictures that actually look like stuff – and will feature over 300 finalist works from artists all over Australia. Categories include Landscape, Still Life, Figurative, Animal Portraits, Juniors, and an All Abilities section, so there is something for everyone, even if your personal taste leans toward cows in fields or fruit on a table.

The exhibition runs from 19 to 28 June at Firth Park Community Centre on Somerset Drive in Mudgeeraba. Entry is free, which is nice, and all adult works are for sale if you fancy starting a collection or just need something to fill that blank wall above the couch. The venue has a carpark, is family friendly, non smoking, and has public toilets. Disabled access is available but you should contact them for the specifics because no two ramps are the same. Getting there: maybe take the bus or a bike if you want to feel virtuous, or drive but be warned that parking can be tight. Metered spots exist, and you can use the EasyPark app to avoid a ticket because nobody enjoys fines. Come along and spend a few hours looking at what some very talented people have been up to. It will be good, and there will be art.
