Oh, I wish I were a glow worm,
for a glow worm's never glum,
'cause how can you be grumpy
when the sun shines out your ........
Anyway, we have Taylor Russell to thank for this witty poem and the reminder of how happy glow worms make us feel. A trip to the
Tamborine Glow Worm Cave at 104 Hartley Road, North Tamborine will reinforce this happiness and bring about some squeals and giggles in your little ones. A quick 30-minute drive into the Gold Coast hinterland through lush, green hills and you have the recipe for a great family day out. The cave is part of the
Cedarcreek Vineyard Estate and nestled behind the serene vines and gardens.
Tickets to the cave are $19 per adult and $14 for kids aged 4-12. Kids under 4 are free. You can book in advance to avoid disappointment although we have also turned up unannounced on the day and found it easy to join a tour. They run every 15 minutes and are an easy walk from the administration building. There is a restaurant on site for great Devonshire teas or perhaps you are keen on grabbing lunch post your cave experience. The restaurant's covered deck overlooks a picturesque lake with a spectacular fountain. The wildlife will make a play for your attention as you wander around the old world gardens.
Rainforest habitats in Australia are shrinking due to climate change and human impact. Glow worms require a permanently moist environment to survive and hence are dependent on our rainforests for survival. By visiting the glow worms in an artificial cave like the Tamborine one, local glow worm colonies in the wild remain untouched and growing in number. There is also a frog exhibit next to the cave which my children found fascinating. It contains a wide range of amphibians from around Australia and allows the children to all but touch noses with them. This is a great day out for those families looking for something different with an environmental conversation attached.
The nearby restaurant is open from 10 am to 3 pm seven days a week. For $15, children can enjoy fish and chips or chicken nuggets and chips with a fruit drink included. For parents, there is a short a-la-carte menu, or burgers if this is what your tummy craves. A
menu can be found on the Cedarcreek website.
Whilst photography (and light-up shoes) in the cave are prohibited, you will need to keep your camera handy on this trip. The scenery on the way there is gorgeous. The gardens at the cave are gorgeous. The lake is stunning. And your kids will have a great time dodging the water dragons sunbaking on the lawns everywhere.
Please be aware that noise in the cave is disruptive to the worms and you are in complete darkness while in there so keep this in mind when determining which members of your tribe will be heading into the purpose-built cave. My children were not scared in any way, but it was a mild challenge keeping them from squealing when the worms lit up.
The cave is a must-do this holiday season. Do the tour. Wander the gardens. Look at the art gallery inside the restaurant. Chat with some water dragons. Admire the roses. Grab a bite to eat. Visit the frogs, and capture some terrific photos.
