Nestled at the base of
Mount Warning in Uki, New South Wales lies a chance to go back in time.
Mavis' Kitchen and Cabins offer a wooden garden swing, a dam encrusted in purple and pink lilies, an abundance of fruit trees and homegrown delights, and the chance to taste the fattest, fluffiest scones you and your kids have ever laid eyes on.
The occasion was a 'Date Day' with my four-year-old daughter. It is rare that I get to focus purely on her being my middle child, so this was a very important occasion and she was beside herself. We got dressed up, sunglasses and pearlized lippie, and off we drove. I had never been there before and simply read about it on Facebook at some point. I am so glad I did. It is a mix of country hospitality, a museum, every nan's garden, a landscape every fairy would love to hide in, and a warm and inviting restaurant. As I was pushing my little girl on the swing in the sun, I couldn't help but think days don't get any better than this.
With the amazing scones in front of us, the best vanilla milkshake you can buy, a view of Mount Warning behind us, and a position in the sun on the wooden, high-set deck, my girl and I chatted endlessly. The wait staff were so beautiful and their service proved they just get what makes people happy. Prices are reasonable based on the incredible freshness and quality of the food. The marmalade served with the scones was made from the oranges covering the big tree in front of us. It appeared that much of what is on the menu is grown in the garden in some form or another.
We toured the
Old Dairy , the old buildings, and the grounds of the 25-acre former dairy farm. The old barn had been done up for a wedding the previous weekend and looked amazing. My daughter pushed her toy pram and dolly all around the dam as we photographed the lilies and discussed everything we could about how the pink flowers managed to float on the water and why her sparkly high heels weren't the best choice for touring gardens and farms. Nevertheless, we had very happy bellies, full hearts, and memories of a perfect day set against one of the prettiest places I have been.
The drive to this haven from the Gold Coast is filled with sweeping views, windy roads, roadside tomatoes and vegetables, and sugar cane. Every shade of green and yellow and blue is represented. Crossing the waterways leading into Mavis', you could be forgiven for thinking you have left the busy world behind. The restaurant is not open on Mondays and Tuesdays, and weekends require bookings. There is very classy accommodation for families on-site if you find the time to make a few days of it. Go to the
website to check out the feel and availability. There are some great lookouts and walks around the area and quaint little villages to visit if you have the time.
Time slipped away from us as we savoured every moment here. We wandered around the gardens and fruit trees talking about where food comes from. We ended up staying much longer than planned and left feeling as though we had been to and seen something earthy and wholesome. To sum up the adventure, my daughter's parting words when I opened the back door of the car for her to climb in were " are we coming back tomorrow?"
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and all year round for accommodation.
