A library should be where people can explore the wonderful world of books. Yes, this is true Yet, for children, the idea of sitting quietly in a corner and perusing the pages of multiple books, book after book, may not be enough to address their burgeoning excitement. There is also the pressure on parents to keep little people 'seated quietly' for an extended period. This is not always an easy task. This is exactly why Helensvale Library , on the corner of Sir John Overall Drive and Lindfield Road, Helensvale, QLD, is a family favourite. Full credit to this library's manager as it truly is a place where kids can explore, learn, move, read, dream, imagine and engage. It's somewhat of an adventure.

When I was young, libraries were shelves of books and a checkout desk. They were a bit smelly at times. They could be classed as intimidating. There were no slides or cubby holes, building blocks or televisions. There were definitely no Lego competitions or weekly playgroup sessions. How fabulous is it then, that the library of Helensvale is so popular with young families because it contains all of these things? My kids love to read and they love slippery slides. My kids love books yet they also enjoy crafts. My kids love having books read to them yet they also love working with other kids to solve puzzles or build things. And I am okay with admitting they love playing new games on computers.

The Helensvale library is open from 9 am to 6 pm each day except Sunday when it is open from 9 am to 4 pm. Parking is in the main carpark on Sir John Overall Drive. (Note - It can be quite busy in this carpark so please be sure to hold your little one's hand!) The library has an ongoing list of activities for big and small kids, and some wonderful author events. There are craft workshops for the kids and the shelves have big cylindrical and padded spaces cut out of them so the kids can climb through and disappear into the next aisle......much to the enjoyment (not!) of parents. However, I can't complain as it is a place where my kids feel they can be themselves and move about freely without being shushed or restricted. I am not suggesting swinging from the roof or loud behaviour is appropriate yet the noise of Lego pieces clinking into the big tub set up in the back corner of the kid's books or the crash of the huge plastic building pieces next to the computer area, are sounds that are considered normal.

Of important note is that the Library is in the Cultural Centre, which is one of the Gold Coast's largest and most versatile purpose-built community centres. It offers a range of flexible spaces for library services, events, workshops and meetings. There are Messy Kids workshops, dance and drama classes, ballet, music and a host of other lessons available for littlies just outside of the library. There is a public chessboard and foosball table. Having been refurbished in 2013, the parent's room inside the library is also a great addition.

Pop on over to the Helensvale Library. It will take you and your children on a new journey of exploration and learning.
