The Be There Group is running a two hour workshop for community and sporting groups, all about fostering gender equality, inclusion and respect, plus how bystanders can help stop domestic and family violence. Its tailored to help build leadership skills and bystander guts, so you can nudge out those ingrained attitudes that make stuff like gender based violence, sexual harassment, bullying or racism seem normal. Using the Be There framework, youll pick up ways to step in when something feels off, not with a showdown, but through care, curiosity and looking out for your crew. This ties into the Sport4Good program, cooked up by Dr Stuart Murray from Sport Diplomacy and Dr Galle Brotto from psychology, with the idea that athletes are half what they do on the field and half off it, so why not call out dodgy comments, back a mate or fix club habits.
Youll cover leading from wherever you sit, bystander tactics to beat hesitation and try them in real life, spotting bullying, harassment and racism plus their effects on the vibe, how to call out bad behaviour kindly without drama, getting DFV including coercive control, its gendered side and safe ways to respond, and wrapping up with one doable action to keep things safe and respectful. Catering is on, and your group gets a completion certificate. If DFV is hitting you or someone close, check cityofgoldcoast.com.au/dfv for help. For getting there, think public transport or walking via Translinks journey planner. Parking is tight, so grab the EasyPark app for meters or peek at City of Gold Coasts parking page to dodge fines.
