I should just be upfront and state this is one of my favourite places. I love the food. I love the scenery. I love the excitement on my children's faces when they feed the turtles. I love the deer and pig and alpacas. I love the drive out to the Rivermill. The purple hue covering the ground from the stunning old jacarandas is the icing on the cake. I love the many memories we have created here. I just love The Historic Rivermill !

We have held birthday parties here. We have taken family and friends here. We have been out for the Sunday pony rides. If you have kept up with my other articles, you will know I rate good coffee as an important tool in the mothering journey. As such, I am pleased to say the coffee is good too. It is matched by great service. I have found the staff really do aim to please.

There is a museum showcasing the history of farming and the Mill, and displaying antiques on the way into the cafe. If you stay connected to the Rivermill Facebook page you will be first to know about special events for the kids such as face painting, high teas, and art workshops that are a regular feature.

There is a petting zoo, a small playground, full access to the grounds on which to set up your picnic rug, a jetty from which to watch the eels, ducks, and turtles, and a view like no other. As the water flows down the river and over the rapids on the bend, you get that sound of nature that will wash your worries away. It is the type of place that all great partners should take the mothers of their children to when they need to destress. That's exactly what occurs here. Relaxation, destressing, and enjoyment in the moment. From the moment you take the turn into the winding driveway, you are confronted with a vision of green, an old barn, plenty of parking with easy flat access to the cafe, and lilies on the pond.

The turtle food, comprising raw fish, is available at the cafe for $3 a tub and is a true thrill for the kids. The turtles practically jump out of the water to grab at the food and the kids squeal and giggle non-stop. Expect them to get dirty as, despite my best efforts, this has always been the case. We have also had a few wet feet and stolen paddle pop sticks as the turtles are not shy in grabbing what they want and will pull the sticks from the kids if you aren't careful. My indignant five-year-old has chased her stick into the water on a 'few' occasions, whilst giving the offending turtle a robust talking to.

Alpaca food is also available at the cafe, and the deer and alpacas never seem to display any manners while being fed. The feeding area can get quite muddy in the wet so choose your day to visit when it isn't or hasn't been raining. Next door to the deers, there is a rather sizable pig, who grunts and carries on, which my young son thinks is the highlight of the visit. Just be careful as Mr Pig can get confused between food and little fingers so best to keep an eye on what goes in its mouth!

Bookings are essential on Mother's day, Father's day, and special occasions as it can get quite busy. Sunday lunch can also fill the car park but even so, it usually isn't a long wait before a table becomes available as it is a rather large venue. The Mill sometimes closes for weddings and events so do keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates to avoid being disappointed. Do not forget your camera and be prepared to spend a good few hours as there is so much to do and you want to do it slowly. We are always rushing around as mums, so this is an ideal venue to make yourself a commitment to slow things down and breathe.

Located at 950 Beaudesert Nerang Road Mount Nathan Queensland 4211 , this is a must-visit location for Brissie and Gold Coast families.
