The Scenic Rim of Queensland never ceases to impress me. There is so much to see and do. One of the must-see destinations in this region is
Lake Moogerah. Its shimmering blue waters and lush green fields are a popular destination for camping, hiking, picnics, BBQs, boating and water sports. Located one hour and fifteen from Brisbane, and fifteen minutes more for Gold Coasters, this is a lovely Sunday drive filled with stunning views, good food, and great memories out on the water.
Lake Moogerah Caravan Park is a popular destination for those families wishing to have it all. Sun, scenery, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, swimming, and relaxing. The caravan park is popular over peak season so be sure to plan ahead if you wish to grab your spot. There is a two-night minimum in place and loads to keep the kids out of your hair. On the other side of the water,
Lake Moogerah Cafe Restaurant sports a beautiful outback feeling and is renowned for its great service and wholesome food. It is open from 10 am to 4 pm on Fridays and 8:30 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The gardens are sweet and the scones come highly recommended.
The playground adjacent to the Cafe is great for all ages and there are BBQs and seating available all over the parklands. The trees sheltering the park are of an era gone by and very tempting to those kids who love to climb. The views out over the Lake are phenomenal and you will have your camera out constantly snapping away. There is an abundance of wildlife, especially bird life everywhere and some fine-looking cows grazing on what looks like the lushest and happiest fields on earth. We met with some swans on the lake, ducks, lizards, cockatoos, cows and more cows, wrens, wagtails, kookaburras, butterflies, dragonflies and an abundance of fish swimming in the lake. My kids are wildlife crazy so this meant they were happy spotting everything and anything that moved.
A stroll along the Dam Wall is a further adventure for all ages. Perched high above the rugged valley below, the views are great and the noise of the water rushing through the spillway was a great thrill for Master Two. He was also a bit scared that it might wash him away so the walk across the wall was a mixture of squeals of delight.... and emotional requests to pick him up and carry him. That's ok. That's what mums do! If you are super energetic you can then continue on and do a hike up the adjacent hill opposite the Dam Wall yet with three young ones in tow, this wasn't on my options list.
On the other side of the lake, we watched a family of swans living their best life. We were there late afternoon and we had the location pretty much to ourselves, so sitting by the lake, listening to the sounds of nature, watching the swans, and feeling as though this natural playground was ours exclusively, meant that none of us wanted to leave. However, when we did, the trip home was also pleasant through abundant cattle and horse country, dotted with gorgeous homes, and quaint but safe roads. Definitely recommend this as your next weekend drive!
