Oxenford Lake at Watersports Lane, Oxenford, QLD is a special place to visit regardless of anything else. I have often taken my children here to watch the sun set or rise, walk the dog, grab a milkshake at the Watersports Cafe, or play in Damien Leeding Park . On a summer afternoon, sitting on the banks of this lake and watching the day draw to an end is a truly fabulous way to slow life down and smell the roses. However.....

.... I recently found out that FREE sailing for juniors is offered here and so now my love of this place has just grown exponentially. On a Saturday, booking-dependent, free sailing lessons are offered by qualified Sailing Instructors. Run for 7-17-year-olds, the kids go out on Hobie Wave Catamarans and honestly have a ball.

Miss Seven ventured out with an incredible young lady, qualified in everything sailing, a few weekends ago and did not want to return to shore. Against an azure sky and the most relaxing of breezes, the water sparkled and my daughter and two others on board the Hobie, sailed off while I sat with Master One and Miss Five on the shore. Those left behind shared caramel milkshakes from the cafe whilst enjoying every aspect of the peaceful lake and the many people walking their dogs. Parking is abundant, seating is available, the fresh air has no limitations and pride was swelling in mum as she saw her elder daughter getting into the love of sailing.

Sessions go from 8:30 am to 3 pm in hourly sessions. You need to go to their website to book and bookings are taken roughly ten days in advance. Kids need to wear their boardies and rashies and are provided with a lifevest. Hats, sunscreen and patient parents are also on the needed list.

So what did Miss Seven say about her Learn To Sail experience? She LOVED it. The people were fantastic. I am not sure I have ever turned up to a sport and been so easily and openly included by the team. The adults managing the process are excellent and provide you with so much confidence in the process. Miss Seven captured a snake skin, an abandoned crab trap, discarded bottles (this is sad), loads of sailing tips and mentoring, and a real love of sailing - all in one hour. She is heading back in a few weeks for the She Sails Junior event, hosted at the same location.

There are not too many things in life that come for free. There are not too many things in life that are free and easy to access. This is one of those cases where, if your kids are between the ages of 7 and 17, enjoy the water, and like being outdoors, they need to click the above link and get involved. They can progress to the local sailing squad or who knows where afterwards. Such a great opportunity not to be missed!
